The Montreux Christmas Market — Marché de Noël de Montreux — is one of the most visited winter markets in Europe and consistently rated among the continent's finest. What sets it apart isn't just the scale: it's the setting. The market runs along the entire lakeside promenade with the Alps rising behind it and Lake Geneva reflecting the lights. There's nowhere else in Europe where you can browse Christmas stalls with this backdrop.

What makes Montreux's Christmas Market different
Most European Christmas markets run for a few weeks in a town square. Montreux's stretches along 2 kilometres of lakefront promenade, with over 160 decorated chalets, an ice rink, a Ferris wheel, and a separate dedicated children's market. The combination of the lake, the Alps, and the Belle Époque buildings creates an atmosphere that genuinely can't be replicated elsewhere.
The market also has strong F&B — raclette, fondue, vin chaud (mulled wine), and local Swiss specialties are available throughout. Several restaurants open market-specific menus. December evenings in Montreux are cold (0–5°C typically) but the market is designed for it: outdoor heaters, covered sections, and the warmth of the chalets themselves make it comfortable well into the evening.
Live entertainment runs throughout the market's six-week season — local choirs, brass bands, and street musicians perform along the promenade most evenings, alongside seasonal concerts at the market's stage areas.
Where to stay for the Christmas Market
Location matters more for the Christmas Market than it might appear. The market runs along the promenade from the Casino to the Montreux Palace hotel, with most of the chalets concentrated between these two points. Being within walking distance of this stretch means you can visit the market in the evening without planning around transport — an important consideration when the market closes at 21:00 and you want to be relaxed rather than rushing for the last bus.
Best areas
- Montreux Centre (Avenue du Casino, lakefront): The most convenient location. You can walk to the market entrance in under 5 minutes from most central apartments. Evening visits, spontaneous returns, and late-night walks along the promenade are all easy. This comes at the highest nightly rates during the market period.
- Clarens: A 20–25 minute walk along the promenade or a short bus ride. Good value compared to central Montreux, and the walk to the market through the lit-up promenade is itself pleasant. Recommended for stays of 3+ nights where you're combining market visits with other activities.
- Territet: 10–15 minutes on foot, or one train stop. The approach from the eastern side of the market is slightly less crowded than the western (Casino) entrance during peak weekend afternoons.
When to visit: avoiding the crowds
The market is open daily, but the experience varies considerably by timing. Weekdays in late November and early December are genuinely calm — you can stroll the chalets without queuing, find a fondue table immediately, and take photos without crowds. December weekends, particularly the 6 December Saint-Nicolas weekend and the week between Christmas and New Year, are packed. Expect queues at popular food stalls and full promenade-side restaurants by early evening.
If you're visiting for a weekend specifically to experience the market at its most festive atmosphere, arrive on Friday afternoon, visit the market Friday evening when it's animated but before Saturday crowds build, then explore at leisure on Saturday morning before the coach parties arrive.
Combining the Christmas Market with other activities
The market runs into January, which makes a Montreux Christmas stay a useful base for the broader region. Château de Chillon (20 minutes on foot along the promenade) is open year-round and strikingly photogenic in winter light. The Rochers-de-Naye rack railway runs in winter and the summit views on a clear December day are exceptional. Vevey (10 minutes by train) has its own smaller market and the Alimentarium food museum.
The Riviera Vaud ski area at Leysin and Les Diablerets is accessible by train and PostBus from Montreux — a full day on the slopes combined with a Christmas Market evening is a popular itinerary for December visitors.

When does the Montreux Christmas Market open in 2026?
The 2026 market is expected to open around 20 November 2026 and run through 1 January 2027, based on historical dates. Exact opening dates are confirmed by the Ville de Montreux in autumn. The market is open daily including Christmas Day, with extended hours on weekends and holidays.
How far in advance should I book accommodation?
Book weekend accommodation at least 8–10 weeks in advance. The market period is the second busiest in Montreux after the Jazz Festival, and lakeside apartments in particular sell out early. New Year's Eve and the December 24–26 period are the tightest windows — treat them as peak-season dates.
Is the Montreux Christmas Market free to enter?
Yes, entry to the market promenade is free. The ice rink and the Ferris wheel have separate admission fees. Food, drinks, and shopping at the chalets are of course priced individually. Budget CHF 40–80 per person per evening visit for food, drinks, and one or two small purchases.
What is the weather like in Montreux in December?
Temperatures range from 0–8°C during the day, dropping to -2–3°C in the evenings. The lake moderates the climate compared to inland Switzerland — Montreux rarely sees the heavy snowfall of higher elevations. Dress in warm layers; the market has outdoor heaters and covered sections but is fundamentally an outdoor experience.
How does Christmas Market pricing compare to Montreux's other peak periods?
The Christmas Market pushes lakeside apartments to roughly 2–3× base rate — the second-highest peak of the year after the Jazz Festival's 3–5×. Outside these two events, pricing runs much closer to base rate. See our Montreux summer and shoulder-season rental guide for the full year-round comparison.
